Nelson Mandela will come to enjoy the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup 2010
African National Congress spokesman Jackson Mthembu said the former president will make a rare appearance for both events to be held in Johannesburg.
"Madiba will grace both the opening and closing of the World Cup," said Mthembu, using Mandela's clan name of traditional, as many South Africans. " We are very honored to have an icon of the stature of Mandela to grace this important event. We are very pleased that Madiba will come. Madiba Magic will add to the excitement. "
A spokesman for the Mandela Foundation would not confirm the report, saying it did not disclose Mandela hours early for security reasons.
Former President 91 years old, retired from public life in 2004 but made a surprise appearance last year at an ANC rally before national elections.
Mandela has been appointed by FIFA as one of the architects of the World Cup in Africa. In December 2009, recorded a video message on the importance of Africa made their first international event.
"We feel privileged and humbled to which South Africa has given the singular honor of being the African host country, "Mandela said in the message." We pursue excellence in our organization World Cup, while at the same time ensure that the event leaves a lasting benefit for all our peoples. "
South Africa will play Mexico in opener next week. The opener and the final July 11 in Johannesburg.
Mandela has strong links with sport in South Africa after he appeared in the famous 1995 World Cup final rugby jersey with the Springboks, the country's national rugby team.
He also wore a shirt South African football when the national team won the 1996 African Nations Cup in South Africa.
