September 29, 2005
The Board of Directors of the Sonoma County Futbol Club, parent
organization for the Sol men’s soccer team, voted to form a women’s team
to play under the “Sol” banner in the 23 team Women’s Premier Soccer
League. With the demise of the WUSA, WPSL is the top women’s soccer
league active in the United States with such teams as the California
Storm, FC Indiana and New England Mutiny. Elite current or former
players in the League include : Julie Foudy, Christina Bell. Brandi
Chastain, Kristine Lilly, Joy Fawcett, LaKeysia Beene, Kylie Bivens,
Abby Wambach, Shannon Boxx, Shannon MacMillan, Sissi, and Tisha
Venturini.
The season will run
concurrently with the men’s schedule, starting in May and ending in
August. This offers the opportunity to provide exciting soccer double
headers. Sol will begin the search for a coach for the women’s team in
the near future.
“Since its inception,
the Sonoma County Futbol Club has had as a goal providing elite level
soccer to both genders” said SCFC President Ramiro Briceno. “The
success of the men’s team in 2005 has given credibility to our club and
demonstrated the support in Sonoma County for outstanding soccer,” he
said. “The time is here to extend the opportunity to the elite women
players in Sonoma County.”
