Two Home Wins Propel Sol
into 2nd Place in NPSL
May
1, 2005
On
Friday April 29th, Sol, the Sonoma County Futbol Club men's adult team
playing in the National Premier Soccer League, defeated the San Diego
Pumitas by a score of 2-1 at Ernie Nevers Field at Santa Rosa High School.
Tony Bussard scored
in the 55th minute off an assist by
Adrian Zavala for
the game winner, putting Sol (1-1-1) up 2-1 over the visiting San Diego
Pumitas (1-1-2).
David Briceno opened
the scoring in the 29th minute with an assist from Bussard. The Pumitas tied
up the game near the end of the first half with a goal by Juan Perez. Sol
out-shot the Pumitas 15 to 7. Sol goalkeeper
Beto Sanchez
only had to make two saves on the night. In a very physical game, a total
of 10 cautions were issued including 5 against Sol and 5 against San
Diego. In addition, San Diego coach Brian Hyatt and midfielder Abiel
Coronado were sent off.
Saturday, Sol (2-1-1)
defeated the defending league champion Chico Rooks (1-2-2) by a score of
2-0, getting their second win in two days in front of 768 fans at Ernie
Nevers Field. Brandon
Boone scored the first goal in the 32nd minute off of a great run
and centering pass by David Briceno. Boone flicked the ball far post for
the goal. Former Petaluma and SRJC star
Andres Flores, who
joined the team just this week, scored the second goal working in
combination with
Carlos Barrajas.
Beto Sanchez in goal
had his first shutout of the regular season, making 4 saves. With their
exciting attacking game, Sol outshot Chico 15-11.
Prior to Saturday's Sol-Chico
game, the Sonoma State women's team took on the legendary California Storm
of Sacramento. SSU lost 4-0 but put up a tough fight and great effort
against a very strong semipro team, whose current and former players include
Sonoma County standout Carly Broaddus as well as such familiar names from
women's soccer as Sissi, Brandi Chastain and Lorre Fair.
Next Friday May 6th, Sol will
take on the league leading Salinas Samba at the new turf soccer field at
Piner High School at 6:00 PM. Salinas is undefeated and leads the
league with 9 points after playing only 3 games. The game is being played at
Piner due to a conflict in schedule at Ernie Nevers Field. Please note the
earlier start time as Piner does not yet have a lit field. Sol also plays
the Sacramento Knights Saturday at Sacramento.
Player
personnel for Sol continue to change with availability of Division I college
players next weekend. Anticipated new arrivals include goalkeepers Derek
Shaffer (UC Davis, Piner High, Santa Rosa United) and Eric Kronberg (Cal,
Fresno State, Montgomery, Santa Rosa United) as well as defender/midfielders
Steve Purdy (Cal, U 20 US National Team, Archbishop Mitty-San Jose), Justin
DelaCruz (Cal, Jesuit-Elk Grove) and Brad Yuska (Cal, University of Indiana,
U 16 National Team, Marin Academy).
U.S. Open Cup
These two great wins propel Sol into second place in
the NPSL Western Division with 7 points. Sol has a chance to qualify for
the
Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. Major League Soccer (MLS) teams
participate, so the U.S. Open Cup is an opportunity for amateur and
professional teams to play against each other creating a true "national
championship." The top two teams from our Division will go on based on their
records after two home and two away games. The upcoming Sacramento Knights
game is Sol's last qualifying game.
