Sol defeats
Cal State Stanislaus and
Draws with Notre Dame
de Namur
in Puma Classic
March 20, 2005 Sonoma County Sol of the National Premier Soccer League played
two games in
the Sonoma State Puma Classic Tournament at Lucchesi Park in
Petaluma. (More)
In the first game, Sol and Notre Dame de Namur of Belmont (NAIA)
fought to a 1-1 draw. Sol forward Brandon Boone scored early in the game, but he and fellow forward
David Briceno were contained to just this lone goal.
NDNU tied it up late in the second half. Sol had the better of the run of play
and missed on several great opportunities.
Sol had no such scoring problem in the second game defeating Cal
State Stanislaus (NCAA Division II) 4-1. Boone opened the scoring with an early
goal. The second goal was scored by Carlos Barajas from the penalty spot after Boone was dragged down in
the area prior to popping free for a shot on goal. David
Briceno then scored the first of two goals. Briceno's last goal was
scored as the ball popped out from Boone when several defenders converged on
him. Briceno slotted one low and hard beyond the Stanislaus keeper. Stanislaus
lone goal came off a cross from the right side.
The SSU
Tournament was moved to Lucchesi from Sonoma State due to field conditions. Sol
next takes on UC Davis (NCAA Div I) at Davis on April 2nd at 11 am., leading up to the season opener at Ernie Nevers Field on
Friday, April 15th against the Las Vegas Strikers. |
