Sol Win against Las Vegas,
Samba Fade, Reorder NPSL Standings

June 28, 2005 The first place Sonoma County Sol traveled to Las Vegas last weekend taking on the struggling Strikers (2-8-4) who are currently trailing the pack in the Western Division of the National Premier Soccer League.  While dominating the run of play, Sol missed several scoring opportunities but still eked out a 2-1 win.

Sonoma County scored in the first half with an opportunistic goal by Trevor Hurst.  A scramble for the ball in front of the Salinas net created the chance and Hurst finished emphatically.

Las Vegas leveled the score in the second half with a cross which deflected off the head of defender Steve Purdy to a player on the far post who finished it. Goalkeeper Eric Kronberg got a hand to the ball but could not keep it outside the near post.

The final goal was scored by new Sol striker and legendary Sonoma County and UCLA soccer star, Justin Selander, on a screaming, bending free kick from near the corner of the penalty area inside the far post. Welcome to Sol, Justin.

The win, plus a pair of Salinas Samba losses, has put Sol at the top of the National Premier Soccer League Western Division standings. Sol enjoys 29 points a 6 point lead over Sacramento and Samba who are tied for second with 23 points each.  On the road, Samba lost 4-3 to last year’s League Champion Chico Rooks on Friday night. Traveling to Sacramento on Saturday, Samba dropped another game to the surging Knights 5-2 who have a League high 32 goals for the season and are making a dramatic run for the playoffs.  Sacramento leads Samba on goal differential by 15 and is in the best position to knock off Sol for the 2005 NPSL Western Division Championship as the teams play each other twice in the remainder of the season.  Also, due to scheduling changes the Knights have played only 12 games while Sol has played 14.

This week Sol plays two games. Friday night at 7:00 PM Sol takes on the Albuquerque Asylum at Santa Rosa High School Nevers Field.   Albuquerque is currently in fifth place in the NPSL (West).  Despite their relative standing, Sol has yet to score a goal against the scrappy Albuquerque team, losing to them 1-0 in the second game of the season and tying them 0-0 at Nevers Field June 11th. Due to a printing error, season tickets for Friday's game were not issued.  Season ticket holders will be on the will call list at the ticket counter.

Satuday, July 2, Sol travels to Sacramento to play the Knights at 7:00 PM at Cosumnes River College.

Sol Does It With Defense

The statistics show that Sol is at the top of the NPSL heap largely on the strength of its defense and goalkeeping.  Sol has allowed only 10 goals all season, compared to the next lowest of 17 allowed by Sacramento.  Sacramento leads the league in goal production with 32 goals, while Sol has just 21.

Sol Camp

Sol will put on a soccer camp for boys and girls ages 6 through 16 at Montgomery High School July 18 through 21.  The cost is $100 for 4 morning sessions.  T shirts, soccer balls and tickets to playoff and championship games are included in the package. Coach Dave Shaffer will direct the camp.  Have your young soccer players trained by Sol team members who are the best active players in the Redwood Empire. For more information see the camp flyer and application.
