Sol Opens Season with a 1-1 Tie in Front of
750
April 15, 2005
The Sonoma County Sol opened its second season with a 1-1 tie
with the Las Vegas Strikers at Ernie Nevers Field Friday night. A
crowd of 750 fans, nearly double the single game attendance high
from last season, enjoyed great soccer under the lights on a
pleasant spring night.
David Briceño
opened the scoring early with a goal in
the 7th minute with a header
off an assist from
Adrian Zavala. Briceño led
the league in scoring last season with 18 goals. In the 15th minute,
Levi Parker answered for Las Vegas by splitting the Sol defense and
taking a low shot beating Sol goalkeeper Beto Sanchez.
While
the score showed a tie, the shot count favored Sol. The Sonoma
County team finished with 20 shots to 6 for Las Vegas.
Brandon Boone
led Sol shooters with 6 shots, but was frustrated in finding the
back of the net. Briceño ended up with 5 shots.
Goalie Beto
Sanchez had 4 saves, while Strikers keeper, Emmit
Mielbrecht had 6. The save count was close, but Mielbrecht was
impressive in frustrating Sol’s offense, which spent most of the
night in front of his net.
Next
weekend, Sol travels to
New Mexico for a game on April 23rd against the Albuquerque Asylum.
The New Mexico team placed second in the MPSL last
season with a 12-4
record.
More players are available to Sol next weekend with the completion
of the Sonoma State spring season. Six players are on the Sol
roster from the SSU men’s team. Division 1 college players
will be available to play for Sol in the first week of May.
